Tydd St Giles & The Surrounding Area
Experience Tydd's Micro-Climate - 400 Extra Sunshine Hours!
The village of Tydd St Giles lies in the middle of the Fens, the largest tract of low, flat land in the UK. The Fens are one of the most sheltered parts of the UK as the windiest areas tend to be associated with the Atlantic boundaries. Light, calm winds are prevalent to the inland location of Tydd St Giles and sympathetic tree planting and landscaping in the area, as well as the lee effect of the village, all contribute to a further reduction in wind speed creating a microclimate that is conducive to spending much of the year outdoors.
In terms of rainfall the rain shadow effect caused by high ground in the west generally results in low rainfall and some of the driest areas in the country. Local amateur meteorologists have recorded the annual rainfall to be around 500mm compared to 3000mm in the Lake District. Mean daily maximum temperatures are comparable to the South East, 5-8 º C during winter and 19-22.5 º C in summer with approximately 1500 hours of sunshine annually across the region, which is some 400 hours more than some places in the UK get.
Local legend also has it that the weather follows the three local rivers – the Welland, the Ouse and the Nene – and often misses Tydd, which is away from all three. Fishermen in the Wash tell of watching weather formations tracking the waterways inland, a trend for which the scientific reasons include air tending to be cooler over water, the windspeed being faster over smooth water and evaporation causing fog to settle over rivers.
